IKEA Pull-Down Cabinet Shelf Hack: How I Made Upper Cabinets Easy to Reach

A pull-down shelf for IKEA cabinets is the one upgrade that turned the dead storage above our ovens into space we actually use. This is the Kesseböhmer iMove in IKEA SEKTION — a 30-inch and a 24-inch, both in daily use for about two years. Below are the measurements that decide whether it fits, a sizing table, what it costs, and the install.

If you follow my kitchen projects, you already know this about me — I hate wasted space inside cabinets. Especially the space at the top. You can have a huge cabinet, but if you need a stool every time you want something from the back of the top shelf, that space is not really working for you. Deep cabinets make it worse: once storage gets above eye level, reaching the back of a 24-inch-deep cabinet is almost impossible.

That is why every tall cabinet in my kitchen has some kind of moving system — pull-down, pull-up, slide-out. I want the storage to come to me instead of me climbing up to the storage. This post is about the pull-down part: a pull-down shelf for IKEA cabinets — the Kesseböhmer iMove in our SEKTION cabinets.

The Cabinet This Went Into

This section of the kitchen is where the built-in Miele appliances are installed. The main cabinet is an IKEA SEKTION tall box, 30 inches wide by 24 inches deep, 90 inches high. The lower part holds the 30-inch Miele oven and a Miele warming drawer, which left a large storage area above the oven.

I could have put a regular shelf there. But that would create exactly the problem I was avoiding — another deep shelf above my head where half the stuff disappears into the back. So the upper storage had to move: a pull-down shelf on top, pull-out bakeware trays on the bottom.

Why This Works as an IKEA Hack: SEKTION Is Frameless

The iMove comes in different sizes and configurations, single and double shelf, for two construction types — frameless and face-frame. This is the part that matters.

IKEA SEKTION is frameless. There is no wood face frame around the opening like on traditional American cabinets — doors and hinges mount directly to the cabinet sides, and so do the iMove hinges. For IKEA you need the frameless version, and the frameless dimensions happen to line up almost perfectly with SEKTION cabinets.

A 30″ Cabinet Is Not 30″ Inside

This is the most important measurement in the whole project. IKEA advertises the outside width — 24, 30, 36… Kesseböhmer and every other accessory brand sells by the inside width. SEKTION sides are about 3/4 inch thick, so:

Open the doors and measure inside wall to inside wall before ordering. That is the number that matters, not the one on your kitchen plan.

Minimums for the mechanism: about 11 inches (270 mm) of internal depth, and at least 20-1/2 inches (520 mm) of internal cabinet height — 22-7/8 inches (580 mm) if your door hinges protrude more than an inch into the cabinet, which is the case with the concealed hinges IKEA uses. Plus the inside width above. Check the spec sheet for your exact model — and remember these numbers are for the mechanism only, not for what you plan to store on it.

Not Only for IKEA

The iMove will work not only in IKEA cabinets but in many others, as long as the inside dimensions are close to the manufacturer specs. My install happens to be in IKEA SEKTION, but the same system works in many cabinet brands, face-frame versions included, and you will also see it sold through Häfele distributors too. What matters is the inside width, depth, clear height, and whether your box is frameless or face-frame. If you have a 24- or 30-inch cabinet from another manufacturer, measure it before ruling this out.

Where I Bought Them, and What They Cost

These are not cheap — let’s get that out of the way. German hardware, German design, priced like it. Online the single-shelf frameless iMove runs somewhere around $400 to $550 depending on size and finish, and that number moves around. The two-shelf version costs more.

I did not pay that. Both of mine came off eBay, brand new in the box — $190 for the 30-inch and $170 for the 24-inch. That was a while ago, and eBay is eBay . Check the marketplaces before the cabinet-hardware sites, and make absolutely sure you are comparing the same model: frameless or face-frame, single or double shelf, and the inside width.

The Knape & Vogt pull-out organizers underneath run about $105 to $170 each online, and I have three of them in a row . Same advice: shop around first.

One thing worth knowing before you shop: the frameless single-shelf iMove is thinning out in the US channel. At the time of writing the 30-inch unit (Häfele 504.69.935) still shows in stock at around $400, while the Häfele-numbered 24-inch (504.69.933) now shows as discontinued at several dealers. You can still order that size configured out of Kesseböhmer’s US frameless range, silver frame with white trays included. The face-frame version is far easier to find than either — and it is not the one you want for SEKTION. That is the other reason to check eBay.

The Bottom Half: Pull-Out Bakeware Organizers

I was not going to sacrifice the whole cabinet to the pull-down shelf. Underneath it we needed a place for cutting boards, baking sheets, and trays — the flat things that are terrible to stack, where the one you want is always at the bottom. So under the iMove I installed three Knape & Vogt cabinet-mount pull-out bakeware organizers, and everything stores vertically.

Clearance Planning: Start from the Bottom

This is where the time goes — not the installing, the measuring.

I installed the bottom organizers first, because their height decides where the iMove can sit. Then I loaded them with the tallest cutting board we actually own — not the small stuff. An empty organizer looks like you have plenty of room until a 16-inch board goes in and the shelf hits it.

Same rule on top. Mine carries cocktail glasses and German beer mugs, and beer mugs are tall. You need clearance for the mechanism, plus the load standing on it. I played with the paper templates and the shelf itself before drilling anything. Once the numbers worked, I marked both sides — in my case about 9-1/2 inches from the bottom shelf up to the bottom of the hinge. The distance from the front edge of the cabinet to the front part of the hinge is about 3-3/8″. Measure to the hinge, not the shelf; the hinge sits differently than the shelf does.

Installation: The Germans Made This Easy

Kesseböhmer includes left and right paper templates, and they take the guessing out of getting both sides aligned. Tape the template to your line with masking tape, mark and drill the guide holes for the bracket — use the bit size and depth printed on your template — set the mounting brackets, and drive the included screws.

Then the whole shelf goes in as one connected unit. You are not standing on a ladder assembling 35 little pieces inside a cabinet — the system comes assembled. Set it in the upright position, screw it through the brackets into the cabinet walls with the four included screws, snap the left and right covers on, done.

How It Works Day to Day

One limitation of running both systems in one cabinet: the bottom trays have to be pushed all the way in before the shelf comes down, or they sit in its path. In real life it has never bothered us. Trays in, pull the handle, shelf comes down.

The hinges are spring-assisted, which matters when the load is glassware. The shelf comes forward and down in a controlled motion and the mechanism helps lift it back up — you are not fighting it, and you are not catching nearly 18 pounds of beer mugs coming at your head. The 30-inch shelf is rated for 17.6 pounds (8 kg), and our glass load sits right around that. Stay within the rating for your model.

My wife is not tall, and this was the whole point. Before, anything high in that cabinet meant a stool, and even with a stool you are reaching blindly into a deep cabinet. Now she opens the doors, pulls the handle, and every glass comes to her.

The Second One, in a Shallow Cabinet

The 30-inch is not the only install. The smaller 24-inch frameless version went into another SEKTION cabinet — 24 inches wide and only the shallow 15-inch SEKTION depth. Same white shelf with the silver frame on both, and it blends in with the rest of the kitchen organization.

A Word on Cabinet Lighting

Most of our kitchen cabinets and drawers have lighting inside, motion-activated when the door or drawer opens. These four tall upper sections I left without lights on purpose. When the doors open, the ceiling lights flood the white interior and everything lights fine inside — and honestly, by that point in our never-ending DIY kitchen project I wanted to simplify and finish the kitchen build asap (was too tired 🙂

The smaller 24-inch wall cabinet with the second iMove did get lights inside. It sits in a corner and catches much less light from the ceiling, so it got an IKEA MITTLED sensor light inside.

The practical tip: while you are already in there drilling for the pull-down shelf, that is the moment to add the in-cabinet LED lighting.

A Couple of Years In

I did not install this last weekend and immediately write a review. It has been a couple of years of daily use — no adjustments, nothing loose, no maintenance, no noises. Pull down, pull up, wipe the shelf once in a while.

Would I install it again? Absolutely. This is exactly the kind of IKEA hack I like: nothing hanging outside the cabinet, nothing changed about how the kitchen looks, and dead storage above an oven turned into space we use every day. Will the Kesseböhmer iMove fit IKEA SEKTION cabinets?

Yes — use the frameless version. SEKTION is frameless construction, and the iMove hinges mount directly on the inside cabinet walls. A 24″ SEKTION box takes the 24″ frameless iMove, a 30″ box takes the 30″ version.

Do I need the frameless or face-frame iMove for IKEA?

Frameless. IKEA has no wood face frame around the opening. The face-frame version is for traditional American cabinets with a frame — buying the wrong one is the most expensive mistake you can make on this project.

How long does the installation take?

The install itself is about 25 minutes per cabinet — the included paper templates locate the drilling, and the shelf goes in as one assembled unit. The clearance measuring is what takes the time.
