I Replaced Our Boring Kitchen-to-Garage Door With a Modern Fiberglass Door

Alright, so let me tell you about this kitchen to garage door replacement. We had this very basic, very depressing, boring entry door going from the kitchen to the garage — a standard 36″ x 80″ with a little window on top — and I just couldn’t stand looking at it anymore. It didn’t match anything we were doing in the kitchen, and it had to go.

So I pulled out the old door and the old frame, put in a modern wood-look fiberglass pre-hung door, built my own flat trim with exposed hex screws, painted the trim metallic silver, added a long pull bar, and installed a Samsung fingerprint smart lock. The whole entry looks completely different now.

I’ll also tell you the one part I’d do differently, because that’s probably the most useful thing in this post.

Why This Garage Entry Door Replacement Was Overdue

The old door wasn’t falling apart. I just hated the way it looked.

It was a standard old-style door with a decorative window up at the top, and absolutely nothing modern about it. That became a lot more obvious once the kitchen started coming together — clean, contemporary, white, silver details — and then you looked over and saw this old traditional door sitting there.

It just didn’t belong anymore. And painting it wasn’t going to fix the design. I wanted the door to become part of the kitchen, not something we were trying to ignore. So I decided to replace the whole thing. Door, frame, trim and hardware.

The New Exterior Door: Fiberglass That Looks Like Real Wood

I went with the MP Doors 36 in. x 80 in. Contemporary Teak Medium Oak Right-Hand Inswing Fiberglass Prehung Front Door from Home Depot.

I love this door. I don’t have to paint it. It looks really nice — it looks just like real wood, but it’s fiberglass and the stained medium oak finish is already on it from the factory. There’s nothing to do. It just looks good right out of the box.

Once I saw that warm wood finish against the white walls and the silver details in our kitchen, I knew this was going to work.

I didn’t just swap the slab. The old door and the entire old frame came out.

The MP door comes as a complete pre-hung door and frame assembly, and I wanted to start fresh rather than try to hang a brand-new modern door in an old frame. I pulled the old unit, cleaned everything up, and brought the new assembly in.

It fit pretty well, but you still have to take your time here. I used regular stock shims around the new frame and kept checking as I went — level, plumb, the gaps around the door, how it closes, how it sits against the weatherstripping. Then check it all again.

A pre-hung door makes the install a lot easier, but that doesn’t mean you just drop it in the opening and start driving screws. Get the frame right first. If the frame isn’t square and plumb, you’re going to fight that door forever afterward. I kept adjusting shims and opening and closing the door until I was happy with it, and once it operated smoothly and the reveals looked right, I secured the frame.

Now I had a completely new door and frame — and I could get to the part that really made this project mine.

Does a Garage Entry Door Have to Be Fire-Rated?

Short answer: yes — and this is the one part of the project you shouldn’t eyeball.

The door between an attached garage and the living space isn’t just an entry door. It’s a fire-separation door. Under IRC R302.5.1, the model code most US jurisdictions build from, that opening has to be protected by one of exactly three things:

  • A solid wood door at least 1-3/8″ thick
  • A solid or honeycomb-core steel door at least 1-3/8″ thick
  • A door in a labeled 20-minute fire-rated assembly

The code also requires the door to be self-closing and self-latching, and it doesn’t allow a garage to open directly into a room used for sleeping.

Notice what isn’t on that list: fiberglass. A fiberglass door qualifies only under the third option — it has to actually carry a 20-minute fire label. Plenty of them do, and the label is usually stamped on the hinge edge or the top rail. Plenty don’t, including a lot of doors sold as front doors. Check the label before you buy, not after it’s hanging.

Two more things worth knowing if you’re copying this project. Self-latching means the latch engages on its own when the door swings shut — a deadbolt you turn by hand doesn’t satisfy it. And self-closing is a separate requirement from a smart lock’s auto-lock; that takes a closer or spring hinges, not electronics.

The other one is machining. If your door is fire-rated, cutting a large opening into the slab for non-standard hardware can void that label. I took a lot of material out of mine for the Samsung lock — which is a big part of why I said I wouldn’t do it again on a door where the rating has to hold.

Codes get adopted and amended locally, so your building department has the final say, not a blog post. Call them before you buy the door — it’s a five-minute phone call that decides which door you’re allowed to put in the hole.

Custom Modern Trim — My Way

Now here’s where it gets interesting.

I decided to put on different trim, because the trim that we used to have — and the trim most people use — is just regular mitered trim. There’s nothing wrong with it, I just don’t like it for my house. It doesn’t look modern or contemporary to me. It looks very old. I wanted something that would feed into the rest of my modern kitchen and the space itself.

So I use the same system I’ve worked out everywhere else in the house and garage: flat molding, metallic paint, and exposed hex confirmat screws. Simple, cheap, and I love the way it looks.

The Molding I Used

I went to Home Depot and got three pieces of basic flat casing — Alexandria Moulding, 9/16 inch (0.5″) thick by 2-1/4 inches wide, 84 inches long, primed MDF. They sell them everywhere at the big box stores.

The profile is dead simple. The face is basically flat and the edges are only slightly rounded, not much. That’s exactly what I like. No decorative profile, no fancy corners. Just clean, minimal lines. And they’re cheap — under five bucks a piece.

The Confirmat Screw System

Here’s my thing — I use confirmat furniture screws, 7 x 50 mm, with a hex socket in the head. Instead of hiding the fasteners, I make them part of the look. But if you’re going to expose your screws, they have to look intentional. You can’t just put them anywhere.

Two things to watch when you’re buying. Get the hex socket version, not Pozi or Phillips — the clean hex recess is the whole reason these look like a design detail instead of hardware you forgot to hide. And watch the length: some brands sell the identical screw as 7×49, so don’t get thrown if the listing says 49 instead of 50.

The length matters more than people think. You’ve got 9/16″ (0.5″) of molding plus your drywall to get through before the screw even reaches framing, so a short screw ends up barely holding anything. At 2″ (50 mm) I’ve still got a solid bite into the stud behind it.

I measure the space first. I start with the top — put a piece of molding up there and mark two lines where the top board ends. Then I take it down and do the sides first, trimming the left and right pieces to length.

Then I space the screw holes out evenly. I don’t like to put a lot of them, because they have to match the rest of the look. On the sides it’s usually about 19 inches between screws. On top, more like 15 or 16 inches, depending on the size of the opening and how it looks to your eye. There’s no magic number — I just want the spacing to look balanced.

The Drill Bit That Makes This Whole Thing Work

This is the piece most people miss, and it’s the difference between screw heads that look like a design detail and screw heads that look like a mistake.

A confirmat screw isn’t shaped like a regular wood screw. It’s got a fat threaded body, a narrower shank, and a flat head that needs its own little seat. If you just drill a plain round hole, the head won’t sit right, the molding wants to split, and nothing lines up.

So I use a confirmat two-piece step drill bit, 7 x 50 mm, made right here in the USA — matched to the screw. It cuts all three diameters in one pass — the pilot for the threads, the clearance for the shank, and the seat for the head — all in one shot, all perfectly concentric.

It makes the holes clean and it makes them safe. No splitting the MDF, no wandering bit, no blowout on the back side. And every single screw head ends up sitting at the exact same depth, which is the whole point when they’re going to be visible. Trying to do this with regular twist bits and a countersink is a lot of fussing for a worse result.

If you’re going to copy this trim system, get the right bit. It’s the cheapest part of the whole job and it does the most work.

Don’t Automatically Drill Down the Center

One important tip. Whenever you drill your holes, don’t automatically go right down the middle of the trim width, because sometimes the middle puts you into a shim or the empty space behind the frame. You always want to go toward the stud so the screw can grab something solid.

If it ends up in the middle, that’s fine, but mine usually go just a little bit to the left so I can catch the stud. I’d rather have a screw holding something than have it perfectly centered and holding nothing.

Dry Fit Everything First

I pre-drill all the holes — both sides and the top — then temporarily install everything. I don’t screw them down all the way at first. I’m just dry fitting, checking the length, the alignment, the screw spacing, the reveals, the gaps, and how all three pieces look together.

Once it looks right, I take it all back down again. Yes — I install it and then remove it. There’s a reason, and I’ll get to it.

The Gap Detail

Whenever the left and right sides are fitted, I leave a little bit of a gap between the top trim and the side pieces. Just a tiny, tiny gap. I don’t want it completely flush like a traditional casing. That little shadow line is what gives it the modern, architectural look. It’s a very small detail, but it makes a difference.

Cutting and Filing the Edges

The casing comes 84 inches long and the door is 80, so the vertical pieces get cut down. I cut mine on the table saw, and then I file the fresh cut edge by hand so it matches the rest.

The molding from the store has edges that are slightly rounded — just tiny — and if you leave your cut end perfectly sharp it doesn’t quite match. It’s a minute with a hand file. No big deal. But those little things are what make the finished job look right.

I Paint All My Trim Before It Goes on the Wall

This is probably the biggest thing I do differently, and it’s the key to the whole look.

Once all three pieces are fitted and everything looks good, I take them back down and paint them separately. I lay them flat in the garage and paint the face, the edges and the ends. I never install trim and then tape around it.

One thing before they come off the wall — mark the back of every piece. I write left, right and top on the back side in pencil, and an arrow for which end goes up. All the holes are already drilled at that point, and they’re drilled where the studs are, not in some generic pattern. So if you mix up the left piece with the right one, or flip a piece end for end, none of those holes line up anymore and now you’re drilling fresh holes into a piece you just finished painting. Two seconds with a pencil saves you that.

The Metallic Silver Paint

Our walls are basically white, so I like to create some contrast. I love silver paint. Dark silver, white silver — it’s up to you and your room. For this one I used Glidden Metallic Tones Silver Metallic Interior Specialty Finish from Home Depot — that’s MTL4000, and one quart is plenty for all the door trim in a kitchen.

I love it. They’ve got a lot of shades, and you can mix whatever you want — I’ve mixed my own shade too. It’s inexpensive, really easy to use, and it’s water-borne. But you have to keep stirring it as you go, or the metallic pigment settles and the finish comes out uneven.

I used to spray this stuff, but honestly there’s no difference. By the time I set the sprayer up and clean the gun afterward, I’ve wasted more time than I saved. Now I just grab a small foam roller and roll it on — sides, face, ends, a couple of coats and you’re done. The metallic paint covers beautifully and levels out with nice clean edges. It dries quick too. You can install after maybe five, six, seven hours, or give it a day.

One tip with MDF casing: don’t forget the cut ends. Raw MDF drinks paint, so hit the ends you cut with an extra coat or they’ll look dull next to the factory-primed faces.

Why Painting It Off the Wall Beats Taping

Here’s what I love about this. When you paint trim that’s already installed, you have to tape everything — and you can almost always spot where the tape line was. Paint creeps underneath, the edge isn’t perfectly clean, or you pull the tape and something comes with it.

Doing it my way, the trim is completely finished before it ever touches the wall. Then you put that finished metallic piece straight up against the white wall and the transition is razor sharp. It almost looks more like metal cladding than painted door casing.

That’s the look I wanted. Super clean, magazine-type finish, without paying for custom trim.

Installing the Trim With the Hex Screws

Once the paint was dry, the trim went back up using the holes I’d already drilled during the dry fit. That’s the other reason I do it this way — the locations are already there, and everything goes back exactly where it was.

And here’s the important part: don’t over-screw them. They have to be absolutely flush. They can go just a hair deeper, but not much. When you look at them they should read as part of the system — not sunk in, not sticking out. This is where that step bit pays off, because the seat is already cut to the right depth and the head just drops into it. I always hand-tighten the last turn on painted trim.

And keep them straight. They cannot go in at an angle. If every screw is sitting perfectly and then one is crooked, you’re going to see it, and it looks awkward.

With the silver metallic molding and the chrome or zinc screw heads, the fasteners become part of the design. That’s the whole idea. You can play with different sizes and finishes — this is just my way and I love how it looks.

And the best part — if I ever don’t like them, or I damage a piece, I just unscrew it. Repaint it, refinish it, or replace it. The molding is under five bucks. I do this all over my house.

The Samsung SHP-P71 Fingerprint Smart Lock

Alright, trim’s done and looks good. Time for the lock.

I went with a smart lock because I really like the way they look and the way they function. You don’t have to do anything — the battery is supposed to last up to a year or so.

We went with the Samsung SHP-P71 Keyless Fingerprint Push Pull Digital Smart Door Lock. You can buy them on Amazon or eBay, and sometimes you can buy them directly from Korea — they’ll ship them to you. But be aware, sometimes the ones from Korea come with Korean instructions. I like to stick with US sellers for better instructions and support.

I like Samsung because we’ve had them on other doors and they’re bulletproof. They work really nice. You lock the door, you close the door, and you’ve got the option where it locks by itself — you don’t have to do anything. It’s got an alarm and all kinds of options. You can set it up with your phone or with key tags. It’s absolutely beautiful, and they’ve got so many models to choose from.

Would I Put This Lock in a Fiberglass Door Again? Probably Not.

Here’s the part I really want people to read before copying what I did.

The lock isn’t the problem. The lock is great. The problem is how much material I had to remove from the fiberglass door to make it fit.

Most of these locks are designed for European or Asian type doors, as far as I can see. They work okay with our doors, but the Samsung system is a lot more involved than a standard American deadbolt and handle — it’s got electronics and a completely different internal mechanism. Once I started working with the template, I realized I was going to be taking out a lot of material.

And that’s what I don’t like. After you shave out enough for the mechanism, the walls around the lock end up thinner than I’d personally want. For our kitchen-to-garage door, I’m fine with it. For a main entry door, I wouldn’t do it. On a steel door, sure. Probably wood too. But not fiberglass, and not on the front door. That’s just my opinion after actually doing it.

How I Cut the Opening

The lock comes with a template, and that template is your best friend. I taped it on the door temporarily, just like any lock install, and worked from there.

I drilled it out and then used my oscillating multi-tool to shave the material inside. My advice — don’t get aggressive. Take a little, test fit, take a little more, test again. I played with it a couple of times before it fit right.

Doors sold here in the US already come with one or two holes bored, so you’re also enlarging what’s already there and working around it.

It went pretty smoothly overall. It just took a lot more modification than a normal lock.

The Pull Bar Was the Finishing Touch

Even with the smart lock on, the door felt like it was missing something. So I added a long pull bar.

I found one on eBay, dirt cheap. It’s about 6′ long, with three fasteners that go all the way through, and square covers on the back side that hold the bolts so nothing moves. It’s pretty sturdy, and at that length you can grab it anywhere along the door.

Our smart lock pulls down and pushes up, which is fine, but the bar gives us extra grip and a natural place to grab the door. And because the kitchen already has silver and metallic details, that long bar ties the whole door into the room.

The Final Result

Once the lock was adjusted, the bar was on and my metallic trim went back up, the doorway didn’t feel like the same part of the house.

The old traditional door is gone. Now it’s the warm wood look of the fiberglass against white walls, silver architectural trim, exposed hex fasteners, a long modern pull handle and a fingerprint lock. Modern. Clean. Smart. And it finally looks like it belongs with the kitchen.

I’m really happy with the fiberglass door itself. Fiberglass doors are absolutely strong and nice-looking, you don’t have to paint them, they’re maintenance-free, they don’t dent, they’re not easy to damage and they’re easy to clean. It gives me the look of wood without another staining project.

My only real caution is the smart lock install. The lock is great and the door is great — I’m just not sure I’d cut that much material out of a fiberglass door to marry the two again. And that’s exactly why I put it in this post. I don’t want to only show you the pretty finished picture.

Questions People Ask Me About This Door

Can you install a smart lock on a fiberglass door?

You can — mine is a Samsung SHP-P71 in a fiberglass door and it works fine. But I wouldn’t do it again on a main entry door. The Samsung mechanism needs a lot more material removed than a standard deadbolt, and that leaves the walls around the lock thinner than I’d want on a front door. On a kitchen-to-garage door like mine, no problem. On your main entry, I’d look at steel or wood, or check the door’s construction very carefully first.

Do you need a new frame for a pre-hung door?

The pre-hung unit comes with its own frame, so yes — I pulled the old door and the old frame out and installed the complete new assembly. Because my opening was already a standard 36 x 80, I didn’t have to rebuild the rough opening. I still had to shim the new frame and fuss with it until it was level, plumb and closing right.

What size screws and drill bit do you use for confirmat trim?

Painting it off the wall gives you a razor-sharp edge where the trim meets the drywall.

How far apart should the screws be on exposed-fastener trim?

About 19 inches apart on the sides and 15 to 16 inches across the top, adjusted to whatever looks balanced on your opening. And don’t automatically drill down the center of the molding — aim toward the stud so the screw actually grabs something solid.

Why leave the screws exposed instead of hiding them?

Because I want to see them. That’s the design. The metallic trim with evenly spaced hex heads gives the doorway an industrial, architectural look that regular mitered casing can’t. If you prefer invisible fasteners, my system isn’t for you — and that’s fine. That’s the nice thing about doing it yourself.
