The kitchen work triangle
A kitchen feels effortless when the three things you use most — the sink, the refrigerator and the stove — form a comfortable triangle. Aim for each leg between 4 and 9 feet, with the three legs adding up to roughly 13 to 26 feet. Keep walkways at least 42 inches wide (48 inches if two cooks share the space), and try not to route heavy traffic straight through the triangle.
Kitchen layout types explained
Before placing cabinets, pick the layout that fits your room. The free 3D kitchen planner supports all five common kitchen layouts — choose yours and then customize from there.
Single-wall kitchen
Everything runs along one wall. Best for narrow spaces and open-plan apartments. Keep the sink between the fridge and stove to maintain a tight work triangle.
Galley kitchen
Two parallel runs of cabinets face each other with a corridor in between. Highly efficient — popular in compact homes and professional kitchens. Allow at least 42 inches between opposing counters.
L-shaped kitchen
Cabinets wrap two adjacent walls into an “L.” One of the most versatile kitchen layouts — the open corner works well for a dining area or island, and it suits medium to large rooms.
U-shaped kitchen
Cabinets on three walls give you maximum counter and storage space. Great for families and serious home cooks. Allow at least 60 inches of clearance in the center so two people can cook comfortably side by side.
Island kitchen
